The Japanese passport measurements
Borderless, 35 mm wide by 45 mm tall. Crown to chin must be 34 +/- 2 mm (32-36 mm). The gap above the head must be 4 +/- 2 mm (2-6 mm). The centre line of the face must sit on the centre of the photo, and the shot must be under six months old.
How this relates to ICAO
ICAO recommends that the head occupies 70-80% of the image height. The Japanese 32-36 mm inside 45 mm works out at 71-80%, so a compliant Japanese passport photo also satisfies the ICAO ratio. Countries that ask for 2 x 2 inches, such as the United States, need their own page.
Common reasons for rejection
Shadows, patterns or other people in the background; hair over the eyes; glare or tint on glasses; an open mouth; a tilted head; visible printing dots; plain paper instead of photo paper; or any retouching that changes the shape of the face.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use a photo I printed myself?
Yes, provided it is on photo paper, sharp, exactly the right size and free of colour shift, bleeding or creases. Inkjet on plain paper is rejected. Tiling onto an L-size sheet and using a convenience-store print costs about 30-40 yen.
Does the background have to be white?
The requirement is a plain background with a clear boundary between it and your head. White, light grey and light blue all work. Dark colours, patterns and a shadow cast on the wall do not — nor does clothing so close to the background colour that your outline disappears.
Is the specification the same for babies?
Yes — 35 x 45 mm with a 34 +/- 2 mm head applies at any age. For an infant, the usual approach is to lay them on a white sheet and shoot from directly above. Their eyes must be open, and no hand or arm may appear in the frame.
Is my photo sent anywhere?
