My Number card photo, cropped to spec

The My Number card photo has to be 35 x 45 mm with the head measuring 32-36 mm from crown to chin. This page draws those limits on screen so you can line your head up with them.

What the specification asks for

35 mm wide, 45 mm tall, borderless, taken within six months, facing forward, no hat, plain background. The head must be 32-36 mm from crown to chin with 2-6 mm of space above it, and the face must be centred horizontally.

Why applications get rejected

A shadow on the background or face, a fringe covering the eyes, glare on glasses, an open mouth, a patterned background, or a head that is too small or too large. Standing about 50 cm away from the wall keeps your shadow off it.

Paper application versus smartphone application

A postal application uses a printed 35 x 45 mm photo. Applying from a phone or PC uploads a file instead, so the rules become file format, pixel count and file size. Use the digital-resize page for that.

Frequently asked questions

Can I wear glasses?

Yes, provided the lenses show no glare, the frames do not cross your eyes, and the lenses are not tinted. If you cannot get rid of the reflection, take them off for the shot.

Does the background have to be white?

The rule is "plain", not "white". White, light grey and light blue are all accepted as long as the outline of your head is clearly distinguishable and there is no pattern, object or hard shadow.

Can I print the photo at home?

Yes, if it is printed on photo paper at the correct size with no bleeding or colour shift. Plain-paper prints are rejected. A convenience-store photo print from the layout page is the safe option.

Is the spec the same for a child?

The 35 x 45 mm size and the plain-background, no-hat, face-forward rules are identical. For a baby, the usual advice is to lay the child on a white cloth and shoot straight down.
