The specification
33 mm wide by 48 mm tall. Head 28-33 mm from crown to chin, head width 15-22 mm, 3-5 mm of space above the head. Plain white background, colour, taken within six months, face forward, no hat, both ears visible. Online applications may additionally ask for at least 354 x 472 pixels at roughly 40-120 KB.
It is not the same as a Japanese passport photo
Reusing a 35 x 45 mm Japanese passport photo fails because the aspect ratio is different. 33 x 48 mm is taller and narrower, which changes how the margins fall, so re-crop with this preset.
Avoiding a rejection at the application centre
Visa application centres check photos strictly and will send you to their paid photo booth. The usual objections are a shadow on the background, glare on glasses, ears hidden by hair, and a smile showing teeth.
Frequently asked questions
Are glasses allowed?
Generally yes if there is no glare, no tint and the frames do not cross your eyes, but some centres insist on none. Removing them is the safe choice.
Can the background be something other than white?
White is specified. Light grey or blue is likely to be refused, so shoot against a white wall or sheet and stand away from it to avoid a shadow.
Do both ears have to be visible?
Yes, the specification asks for visible ears. Tuck your hair behind them, and keep your fringe clear of your eyebrows.
Is my image uploaded?
