Measure the box on the form first
There is no national standard. If the guidelines state a size, follow it; otherwise measure the printed box. This page offers 40 x 30, 50 x 40, 45 x 35 and 30 x 24 mm. Making the photo a millimetre or two smaller than the box keeps it from overhanging.
Print extras if you are applying to several schools
Each application needs its own photo, plus spares for mistakes. An L-size sheet holds about eight 40 x 30 mm photos, so one or two sheets — 60 to 80 yen — covers a whole application season.
Write your name on the back
Most guidelines ask for your name and school on the back of each photo so it can be identified if it comes unstuck. Use a light pencil or a fine marker, and glue rather than sticky tape.
Frequently asked questions
Should the photo be taken in school uniform?
Uniform is conventional for high school applications and common for university ones, but rarely mandatory. Avoid bright patterns and hooded clothing.
Can I use the same photo for several schools?
Yes, as long as it is within the three-to-six-month window the guidelines usually specify. Crop separately for each school that asks for a different size.
Is a phone photo good enough?
Yes. Good light, a plain wall and the camera at eye level give results comparable to a booth. Use a timer or ask someone to take it rather than holding the phone at arm's length.
Is the image sent anywhere?
No. Loading through to export happens entirely inside your browser.
