The regulation specifies a 3.0 x 2.4 cm photo taken within the previous six months, face forward, no hat, plain background, showing the head and the top of the shoulders with a little space above the head.
You usually do not need to bring one for a renewal
Most prefectures photograph you on site when you renew, so bringing a photo is optional. For a first licence, however, the application form needs a photo attached. Check the prefectural police site for local rules.
A small size still needs a sharp original
24 x 30 mm at 300 dpi is only 283 x 354 pixels, so a soft or dark original still looks soft after downscaling. Shoot in good light, focus on the face and avoid digital zoom. The exported JPEG carries a real 300 dpi tag so it prints at true size.
Frequently asked questions
Can I keep my glasses on?
Yes, if there is no glare on the lenses, the lenses are not tinted and the frames do not cover your eyes. If your licence carries a "corrective lenses" condition, a photo with glasses on is the natural choice.
Are there rules about hair?
Your eyes and eyebrows must not be hidden, and the outline of your face should be visible rather than buried in hair. There is no rule about hair colour.
Will a home-printed photo be accepted?
It should be, if it is on photo paper, the right size, under six months old and sharp. The counter can still ask for a retake, so a convenience-store photo print from the layout page is the safer route.
Is the image uploaded?
No. Cropping and exporting both happen inside your browser; the picture never leaves your device.
